Frequently asked questions
What are the benefits of coconut soy wax?
In The Air uses 100% coconut soy wax for every candle poured, and 100% coconut soy sunflower wax for all wax melts. Most big candle brands use wax blends with petroleum-based paraffin in them. Paraffin wax is used to make candles "prettier" by keeping the wax smooth as they cool, but this type of wax produces more soot and toxins as it burns. Paraffin also burns much quicker, by design. This means you have to buy more candles, more often.
Coconut soy wax burns cleaner and slower, providing you with a longer, worry-free candle experience.
How are the candles and wax melts scented?
We use non-toxic, phthalate-free fragrance oils mixed with natural essential oils. These oils are clean burning, offering improved home air quality compared to paraffin candles and harmful synthetic fragrances. Happy burning/melting!
Why wood wicks?
Wooden wicks are a cozy alternative to traditional cotton wicks. A bonus unique to wood wicks is the soft, crackling noise they produce as they burn. It's like a mini fireplace wherever you decide to light your candle.
Where are your products made and manufactured?
Our materials are all sustainably sourced within the US, which are then gathered and hand poured in a small studio (okay—a dining room table!) in Columbus, OH. We carefully select our manufacturing partners to ensure our products are of high quality and a fair value.
Why won't my candle stay lit?
Wood wicks can be tricky at times. It's important to trim your wicks to about 1/8" every time you relight your candle. Yes! Every time.
If you don't have a wick trimmer on hand, you can use a napkin, your fingers, or anything you can to remove all the loose, burnt bits off the wick and expose fresh wood for the new flame. The ash on the wick is what prevents them from burning properly and staying lit. Longer wicks also mean more potential for soot.
How long will my candle/wax melts last?
CANDLES:
4oz candles will burn between 30-40 hours.
12oz candles will burn between 70-80 hours.
For the first burn, allow the melt pool to reach the outer edges of the can to prevent wax tunneling. This will usually take between 3-5 hours, depending on the size of your candle. Allowing the melt pool to reach the edges ensures consistent burning for the life of the candle, since wax has a strong memory based on the first burn. After the initial burn, we recommend burning up to 4 hours at a time.
WAX MELTS:
Each 4oz bag will provide up to 96 hours of scenting.
Each wax square lasts between 8-12 hours. The fragrance strength will naturally subside each time you melt the wax. Add a fresh square when the scent has dissipated.
When will I get my order? / Shipping costs
Shipping is calculated based on your location and the items in your order. You will always know the shipping price before you purchase.
For products that are on hand and ready-made, there is a processing time of 2-5 business days. For made to order and presale products, the lead time will be anywhere between 1-2 weeks. Please note that processing times do not include delivery and transit time.
Why does my candle look different?
Natural waxes, especially soy wax, have a tendency to discolor and texturize as they cool. Sometimes a process called wax frosting occurs where white crystallization forms on the surface as the candle cools and re-solidifies. In this process, the surface may also form some texture or small craters. These are completely natural, harmless and cosmetic effects seen in natural waxes.
Some fragrances, including those with notes of citrus, cinnamon, and vanilla tend to oxidize and discolor the wax more than others. This is due to their higher citrus oils and vanillin content. This may lead to the wax turning light shades of tan, yellow, or red. This, too, is completely harmless and cosmetic and does not affect the quality or function of the candle.
What size candle should I use in my space?
Our 4oz candles are best suited for small to medium sized spaces such as bathrooms and bedrooms, or used as accents on nightstands or coffee tables.
Our 12oz candles are perfect for maximally scenting your large, open spaces such as living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, and kitchens.
Feel free to adjust the size per room based on your desired scent level/intensity.
Bigger candle + smaller space = high intensity
Smaller candle + bigger space = low intensity/subtle scenting
