Frequently asked questions

What are the benefits of coconut soy wax?

In The Air uses 100% coconut soy wax for every candle poured. Most big candle brands (not naming any names) use wax blends with petroleum-based paraffin in them. Paraffin wax is used to make candles "prettier" by keeping the wax smooth as they cool, but this type of wax produces more soot & toxins as it burns. Not to mention paraffin burns much quicker, by design. This means you have to buy more candles, more often.

Coconut soy wax burns cleaner & slower, providing you with a longer, worry-free candle experience.

How are the candles scented?

We use non-toxic, phthalate-free fragrance oils mixed with natural essential oils. These oils are clean burning, naturally making them pet-friendly & offering improved home air quality compared to paraffin candles & synthetic fragrances. Happy burning!

Why wood wicks?

Wooden wicks are a cozy alternative to traditional cotton wicks. Cotton wicks are often lined with lead or other metals to make them stand up on their own. Wood wicks are just that—wood. A bonus to wood wicks is the soft, crackling noise they produce as they burn. It's like a mini fireplace wherever you decide to light your candle.

Where are your products made & manufactured?

Our materials are all sustainably sourced within the US, which are then gathered & hand poured in a small studio (okay—a dining room table!) in Columbus, OH. We carefully select our manufacturing partners to ensure our products are of high quality & a fair value.

Why won't my candle stay lit?

Wood wicks can be tricky at times for those who are new to them. It's important to trim your wicks to about 1/8" every time you relight your candle. Yes—every. single. time. This goes for cotton wicks, too.

If you don't have a wick trimmer on hand, you can use a napkin, your fingers, or anything you can to remove all the charred, burnt bits off the wick & expose fresh wood for the new flame. The ash on the wick is what prevents them from burning properly & staying lit. Longer wicks also mean more potential for soot.

How long will my candle last?

2oz tins will burn between 15-20 hours.

8oz cans will burn between 65-70 hours.

16oz cans will burn between 120-125 hours.

For the first burn, allow the melt pool to reach the outer edges of the can to prevent wax tunneling. This will usually take between 3-5 hours, depending on the size of your candle. Allowing the melt pool to reach the edges ensures consistent burning for the life of the candle, since wax has a strong memory based on the first burn. After the initial burn, we recommend burning up to 4 hours at a time.

Why does my candle look different?

Natural waxes, especially soy wax, have a tendency to discolor & texturize as they cool. Sometimes a process called wax frosting occurs where white crystallization forms on the surface as the candle cools & re-solidifies. In this process, the surface may also form some texture or small craters. These are completely natural, harmless & cosmetic effects seen in natural waxes.

Some fragrances, including those with notes of citrus, cinnamon, & vanilla tend to oxidize & discolor the wax more than others. This is due to their higher citrus oils & vanillin content. This may lead to the wax turning shades of tan, orange, or red. Fragrances with this tendency will be noted in the product description if you are unsure. This, too, is completely harmless & cosmetic & does not affect the quality or function of the candle. We are, however, experimenting with ways to prevent this discoloration/oxidation from happening, so that the wax will stay its usual off-white color.

What size candle should I use?

Our 2oz tins are best suited for small spaces such as bathrooms or to place as accents on nightstands or coffee tables.

Our 8oz cans are ideally used in medium spaces such as bathrooms & bedrooms.

Our 16oz cans are perfect for maximum scenting of large, open spaces such as living rooms, dining rooms, & kitchens.

Feel free to adjust the size per room based on your desired scent level/intensity.

Bigger candle + smaller space = high intensity

Smaller candle + bigger space = low intensity/subtle scenting
